What is virtualization?
In simple words virtualization means that you can have few separate Operating Systems running on single server, sharing its resources and hardware. It can be any type of OS – Linux, UNIX, Windows, Solaris, even MacOS.

Why our company may need virtualization?

There are lot of benefits that can be achieved from servers virtualization.

• Reduce costs by requiring less hardware due to increased efficiency of using your current server. Say, you can run Apache web server that require Linux OS and Microsoft SQL Server that require MS Windows Server OS on the same server.
• Better disaster recovery and faster backup\restore procedure. Virtual machines stored as a single container, so instead of backing up thousands of files and dealing with permissions, checksums, etc, you need to backup single file.
• Virtualize enterprise applications and achieve top performance. You do not need to have separate server instances for different applications. They can run on virtual machines and have balanced resources to provide maximum performance and stability.
• Run multiple OSes simultaneously on single server for testing or compiling purposes. A lot of applications have different platform versions to allow Linux, MacOS and Windows users run it on their preferred OS. And before releasing new version developers must test it to be sure that there's no bugs. So instead of having three different boxes with Linux, MacOS and Windows installed you can have single server with three virtual machines running these OSes.

Virtualization technologies

There are lot of virtualization solution providers on a market. Main virtualization platforms are Microsoft Hyper-V, IBM PowerVM, Citrix XenServer, and VMware vSphere.

We have used VMware vSphere in our recent projects and we are more than happy with its performance and stability. VMware recently released vSphere Hypervisor 5 (ESXi) that works on hardware level and allows to easily manage your virtual environment.

ESXi can be installed directly on your hardware – this means that you do not need to have any host OS installed on your server to create virtual machines. This leads to improved performance and better resources availability to your virtual machines. ESXi takes lower than 5% of server CPU time to run all virtual machines installed.
